MARGAO: Criticising the Revolutionary Goans Party’s (RGP) decision to skip the ‘Save Mhadei’ public meeting in Sankhali scheduled on Monday (January 16), NGOs and activists have questioned the party’s rationale for trying to have a parallel movement when the rest of Goa is coming together on one platform – the Save Mhadei movement, whose ultimate goal is to protect River Mhadei.
“It’s very unfortunate that few amongst us Goans are trying to utilise this crisis situation for furthering their agenda of advertising themselves. We need to realise the seriousness of the situation and the necessity of working together to achieve a common goal of saving Mhadei,” said Swapnesh Sherlekar, president of the Goencho Swabhiman Party (GSP).

“Those elements that divided our society in the 2022 Assembly elections and handed the formation of the government on a platter to the BJP by splitting the secular votes are on the ‘job’ again. While almost the entire Opposition baring them has joined forces with the wide spectrum of NGOs and other entities/individuals, this self-styled ‘pure’ political party has charted a separate course just like they had a parallel ‘coal yatra’ when Goencho Ekvott was conducting the 84 public awareness meetings about coal & double tracking across Goa in a raging pandemic. Feel sorry for those blindly following them,” said Goencho Ekvott (GE) founder Orville Dourado Rodrigues.

Goencho Ekvott has been a key member of the committee which is organising the Save Mhadei public meeting in Sanquelim on Monday.
Anthony da Silva, an activist, who is also part of the group of activists that are collaborating for the Save Mhadei movement and public meeting, urged the RGP to still do a re-think and attend the meeting.
“We had made an appeal to everyone to join us and nearly the entire opposition had agreed to attend the public meeting. I appeal to RGP MLA Viresh Borkar to at least turn up for this as we all need to be united,” said da Silva.
He questioned the rationale of RGP trying to have a parallel movement when the rest of Goa is coming together on one platform – the Save Mhadei movement, whose ultimate goal is to ensure that River Mhadei gets protected as stopping the diversion of the river is of paramount importance, which is their objective and nothing else.
