Chandor locals meet Cuncolim MLA, demand rail over bridge or subway

MARGAO: Parents and panchas from Chandor met Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik and demanded a rail over bridge or road under bridge at the earliest at the railway crossing.

They also submitted a memorandum explaining that whenever the railway crossing is closed, it causes inordinate delay in reaching their respective destinations. The student community is the most affected, they said in the memorandum.
The delegation consisting of Parents Teachers Association of St Joseph Educational Institute was led by PTA Chairman Savio Antao and Chandor Deputy Sarpanch Marcel Fernandes.
They demanded that the government construct a rail over bridge or subway at the existing level crossing on a war-footing in view of the inconvenience faced by the local population when the railway crossing is closed for traffic.
Copies of the memorandum have been marked to South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar and Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. They demanded that there be no more delay and that this has been a long standing demand.
MLA Naik informed them that he has been following up on the matter with the railways.
It is to be noted that Prabhu had recently announced that the railways would be taking up such projects at a 50:50 cost sharing with the government.
“It has been decided that a rail over bridge will be built meters away from the existing level crossing, while a subway has been proposed at the level crossing. The two sites have been inspected by me along with railway officials,” Naik said.
He added that the proposal for the construction of the approach roads to the level crossing had also been cleared by the government.
