Endorses 61-day fishing ban; to seek Navy, CG’s help to enforce same

PANJIM: Higher Secondary teachers from the Vocational stream will get a five-year relaxation in a bid to sort out the present ‘complexities’ which will allow the authorities to regularize them or even allow them to apply afresh, the cabinet decided Wednesday.
It also cleared the proposal for a 61-day ban on fishing during monsoons, instead of the earlier 45-day ban. The ban that will come into force from June 1 and extend till July 31 would apply to both the mechanized as well as the motorized fishing boats; but will not apply to manual fishing boats.
The cabinet also decided to hand over the approach road to the old bridge on the Banastarim side to the respective panchayat to hold its weekly market.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the media that the cabinet had relaxed the age bar only for the teachers who are either on contract, lecture basis or on ad-hoc basis for several years. Explaining that there were a “lot of complexities” pertaining to teachers who were teaching in the vocational stream and the relaxation in the age was a tool in the hands of the government to start sorting out the issue.
He said that the cabinet had also decided to allot the land on the old Banastarim road (approach to the old bridge) to the panchayat, to utilize the same for its weekly market.
The road area, approximately 800 square meters, from Banastarim market to the old bridge, would be now handed over to the local panchayat.
“They can either run the same weekly market on the road or construct a building for the weekly market,” said Parrikar.
On the fishing ban, the CM said that there were some objections taking the issue of solar shrimps catch in the first week of August. The argument was that there would be revenue loss in case the ban was extended till the second week, he mentioned.
He said that strict monitoring would be done and action taken to ensure that the ban was followed by taking the help of the Navy and the Coast Guard.
“We will also sit with the Navy and Coast Guard on the matter,” he said.
