SANGUEM: The main pipeline supplying drinking water to some parts of Salcete and Mormugao area has burst from which water is gushing out like a huge fountain, at Devlamoll ward of Molcornem panchayat.
The pipeline burst in the morning at around 8 am, informed the villagers residing barely around 100 metres from the site.
Just about 8 am a big sound was heard by the villagers and on coming out of their houses, they noticed the huge fountain of water erupting from one of the chambers of water pipeline.
Incidentally, this is the third time the water pipeline has burst in Molcornem village in the last two months.
Executive Engineer Gaonkar claimed said that the pipe burst on account of a crack in the isolation air valve. Gaonkar further claimed that the valve would be replaced by evening and that except for a few areas in Salcete and Mormugao, there will be no major water supply problems to rest of the areas.
It may be recalled that earlier two such incidents were also attributed to cracks in the isolation valve and this has made the villagers residing in the vicinity of the pipeline doubt the quality of the spares used for laying of water pipeline.
A villager Josinho D’Costa who resides barely few metres away from Thursday’s incident demanded an inquiry into material used in the construction and laying of water pipeline.
D’Costa feared that the houses would get washed away in the event of sudden burst in the pipeline and as such urged the government to investigate in detail the reasons for frequent problems in the water supply pipeline.
