MAPUSA: Congress party has prepared a list of candidates for 14 out of 20 wards to represent upcoming Mapusa municipal elections.

The Congress, in alliance with Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and other like-minded opponents, has decided to field a party-sponsored panel in Mapusa for municipal elections.
Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, North Goa District president Vijay Bhike, former councilor Sudhir Kandolkar, Subhash Narvekar, Michael Carasco, Amarnath Panajikar and Tarak Arolkar came together late Wednesday evening to finalise these 14 candidates’ for the fray. Vinod alias Balu Phadke of MGP was absent for the meeting but has given his consent to the list.
The parties jointly ruled that there should not be more than one candidate from the same family. Balu Phadke and Subhash Narvekar will get their sons in the fray.
Meanwhile candidates for 6 more seats are yet to be decided and the final decision will be taken on the basis of the petition filed in the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court regarding the municipal reservation.
The opposition alliance is waiting for the names of the ruling BJP-backed candidates to be announced.
In the last elections BJP reined Mapusa Municipal Council winning 16 out of 20 wards and later an independent winning candidate had joined the ruling party. This time, the Congress and the MGP decided to unite like-minded parties and organisations to defeat the BJP-sponsored alliance in the Mapusa municipal elections.
Many BJP workers are keen to contest the current elections.
