SANGUEM: Cyclonic winds accompanied by heavy rains, thunder and lightning caused severe damages to houses and agricultural plantations in Sanguem and Sanvordem. The roads leading to Sanguem from Nondurlem and Dando were also blocked following uprooting of trees. The cyclonic winds led to power failures in Sanguem and adjoining villages as the electricity cables snapped at many places with trees crashing on live wires.
At Nondurlem, Sanguem, a huge teak tree fell on the live wires thereby blocking the road leading to Sanguem town. However, the Sanguem municipality workers along with the local youth cleared the portion of the road.
Traffic was disrupted for some time along the Dando-Sanguem route as branches fell on electricity cables.
Though the cyclonic winds, which lasted for around 20 minutes, the residents from Sanguem and Sanvordem had to bear the brunt. At Cormonem-Uguem, a coconut tree fell on the electricity cables which damaged an electricity pole.
The worst affected were people from Vorcotto and Tarimol in Sanguem where several trees damaged their houses. The exact quantum of damage is yet to be ascertained.
In Sanvordem constituency too, many people suffered severe damage as trees crashed on their houses. Sanvordem panch Sanjay Naik informed that at Mirabag, Gorgoro Naik, Shripad Naik, Damodar Naik and Deepak Naik suffered losses to the tune of around Rs one lakh each, while Leonora Costa, Gurudas Naik, Rekha Naik, Sandhya Naik and Shankar Naik suffered losses of around Rs 50,000 each.
The fire brigade personnel from Curchorem Fire Service Station and the workers of Sanguem municipality were busy clearing the tress. The linesmen and other staff of Electricity Department were busy trying to restore power supply to the affected areas.
