PORVORIM: Goa will play host to ten Nobel laureates in February 2018 as the State teams up with the Department of Bio-Technology of the Union Ministry of Science and Technology and Nobel Media, Sweden for a month long exhibition and series.
The State on Friday executed a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Science and Technology and Nobel Media for the proposed ‘Nobel Prize Series-India 2018 (Science Impacts Life)’ to be held from February 1-28, 2018 along with a month long exhibition brought from the Nobel Museum, Sweden.
The month-long event will include an exhibition from the Nobel Museum and Nobel dialogues in which the Nobel laureates will interact with school children from across India and teachers. Around 250 students from all around India besides around 4000 students, teachers and researchers from Goa will get the opportunity to interact with the 10 Nobel laureates.
The exhibition will be in the field of physiology and medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, economics and science.
Addressing the media, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said, “Science has been my strength and weakness since I believe that every aspect in the world, including governance is a scientific exercise. It is very important to encourage people towards pure science rather than technology.”
He added, “We must show the world how the possibilities have changed the world by using science as a tool. This event will surely generate good science students.”
The chief minister said that science is a core issue of knowledge and an important aspect of education and that is the reason, it must be pushed as a fundamental aspect of any education. “Scientific thinking allows you to acquire more knowledge; rather it makes you like a sponge. This event is very important for educational up gradation,” the chief minister added.
Department of Biotechnology, Union Ministry of Science and Technology, Director, K Vijay Raghavan said that the employability of the world is merging towards robotics, automation etc. In order to be ready for this, the young generation needs to have a strong foundation of science.
“Goa has been extraordinarily adventurous in taking on changes in the world. This scientific cynosure will allow young Goan to emulate Nobel laureates around the world and to take on formidable challenges against any odds in the future,” Raghavan said.
Nobel Media AB CEO Mattias Fyrenius said Nobel is widely regarded as the most prestigious award in the world since 1901. “The Nobel community is honoured to sign the MoU. This event should be seen as a celebration of science and education,” he said.
