CANACONA, SEPT 28
Construction material worth over Rs 4 lakh used for temporary structures of seasonal huts and shacks was gutted in a fire at Patnem beach in the wee hours of Monday.
Canacona fire services received a call at about 2.45 am on Monday stating that a fire had engulfed the residence-cum-stockyard of one Prakash S Pagi at Patnem. The destroyed material reportedly belonged to one Seby Vaz from Loutolim, fire service officials told Herald.
By the time the firemen reached the site, the fire had taken its toll on several materials of temporary shacks/huts.
The site was not easily accessible to the fire brigade and fire fighters had to use additional water pipes and six tankers to extinguish the fire. Firefighters claimed to have saved property worth over Rs 5.5 lakh.
The fire services informed that the fire destroyed material used to erect temporary shacks and huts, which were stocked after the shacks were dismantled after the last tourism season.
Fire services officials, however, could not throw much light on the probable cause of fire, which took place only a few days before the start of the new tourism season.
Led by Canacona fire-station in-charge sub-officer K D Sail, Sr Firefighter T D Dessai, Driver cum operator R T Devidas, firemen C G Dessai, K H Pawaskar and R S Gaonkar along with 15 labourers engaged by Canacona Municipal Council were engaged in the fire extinguishing operations.
