PONDA: Claiming that cows from Tamil Nadu have poor milk yield, dairy farmers from Tisk-Usgao and Sattari have urged the State government to allow them procure cows from Maharashtra or Karnataka under the Kamdhenu scheme.
According to the farmers, the government procures cows from Tamil Nadu and sells them through its centre at Koparde-Valpoi. They want the government to relax the rules and allow them to buy cows from Maharashtra or Karnataka.
“High milch cows from Karnataka and Maharashtra yields milk twice the quantity as compared to cows from Tamil Nadu,” a milk farmer, Raghunath Gawade, told reporters during a news conference at Ponda on Wednesday.
Gawade along with eight other milk farmers from Tisk-Usgao and Sattari claimed that under the Kamadhenu scheme of the State government, farmers have to buy cows from the government farm at Koparde.
“Apart from the cost, the yield is also low and in the best interest of farmers, the government should relax norms and allow farmers to buy cows of their choice.
