PANJIM: The GFA president Elvis Gomes appeared to be at his political best when in a speech laced with political overtones he said that he favoured the GFA structure to undergo amendment to give direct seats in the executive committee to clubs from those talukas which do not have their own regional identity but are part of either Bardez, Ilhas or Salcete.
The statement made while speaking as the chief guest at the inter-village football final organised by Eagles SC at Sanquelim ground on Sunday drew a thunderous response from the crowd.
When contacted to elicit details about the statement, Gomes said that it just came to his mind after seeing the passion for football and the organisational skills shown by Eagles Sports Club that southern talukas such as Sanguem, Quepem, Canacona and northern talukas like Bicholim, Sankhli, Sattari should have direct representation of one member to ensure their regional interests are represented in the GFA. “I think what I said has merit and I will take it before the Executive Committee if a representation comes from clubs from these areas.”
Meanwhile, reports also said that guest of honour Brahmanand Sancoalkar in his speech exhorted Gomes to continue in GFA for the cause of football to which he gave a diplomatic reply stating that time would decide whether he would be in or out raising a question mark whether he will go for a second stint.
