CALANGUTE: A Russian mother-daughter duo and a Chinese tourist were among those rescued in the Calangute-Candolim beach belt over the weekend, which witnessed the arrival of the first international charter flights to the state, marking the beginning of the tourism season.

On Friday, a Russian woman, 40, and her daughter, 15, were rescued at Candolim beach when they were caught in a rip current after assuring lifesavers they would stay in shallow waters. Lifesavers quickly intervened with a surfboard and rescue tube to bring them back to safety.
On Sunday at Candolim beach, a 58-year-old man from China was rescued by a lifesaver after he was dragged 70 metres deep into the sea by a rip current. Drishti Marine reported that 24 persons were rescued from drowning across the state in the last week, which included five foreign nationals. Lifesavers conducted 16 single rescues and four double rescues, while also reuniting four missing children with their families. The highest number of rescues were carried out in the Calangute-Candolim beach stretch.
A 62-year-old woman from Punjab, missing since early morning on Sunday, was located at Sinquerim beach after lifesavers conducted a search following her family’s report. On Friday, a four-year-old girl from Mapusa went missing at Calangute beach but was found within 15 minutes and safely returned to her father after police confirmation. On Sunday, a nine-year-old boy from Belgaum who went missing at Calangute was quickly located following a public announcement.
Earlier in the week, a lifesaver apprehended a thief who stole a mobile phone from a sleeping tourist’s bag. The thief attempted to flee but was caught and handed over to the police.
