CALANGUTE: “No ordinary nightclub can pay the kind of haftas these nightclubs are paying. Some of these parties start at 4 am and wind up at 6 am. No party starting at that time will have alcohol. There must be drugs there because of which they can afford to pay such huge haftas,” former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes said following protests by locals against the Independence Day holiday parties in Anjuna-Vagator.

“This is completely illegal. You cannot have outdoor parties after 10 pm because there are High Court orders. Holding all-night parties despite high court orders against such events is a complete abuse of power,” Fernandes said while talking to reporters.
Fernandes said the owners of these party venues are “obviously paying a lot of haftas to the government and police. Siolim MLA (Delilah Lobo) on Thursday went with the locals who were protesting against these parties to the Anjuna police and gave an assurance that there would be no music after 10pm. Yet the parties started at 1 am and went on till morning. One party in Morjim went on till 10 am,” Fernandes said.
“Most of these places are owned by outsiders who have come and started these big clubs in Anjuna-Vagator with capacity for 3,000 and charge Rs 5,000 entry and play music day and night. Anytime there’s a holiday there’s a party. It’s totally illegal. If the government and police are not taking action even with the High Court having passed strictures, then it’s a very dangerous situation,” the former MLA said.
