The government is actively coordinating with Maharashtra and Karnataka to relocate the elephant ‘Omkar’ to a safe area, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Monday. “The government is working closely with the Maharashtra and Karnataka governments to ensure ‘Omkar’ is moved to a secure location. The Forest Minister has already been in communication with his counterpart in Karnataka, and coordination efforts are ongoing. The elephant will be relocated as soon as possible,” Sawant told reporters at the Mantralaya in Porvorim.
The Chief Minister also assured that farmers who have suffered crop losses due to the elephant’s movements would be compensated. “The government will strive to provide compensation to the fullest extent possible,” he added. ‘Omkar’, a wild elephant that has repeatedly strayed into human settlements in Goa, has damaged crops and sparked concerns over both public safety and the animal’s well-being. In recent weeks, its movements have triggered a spate of complaints from farmers and local residents, underscoring the urgent need for a humane and effective solution.
