RAIA: St Anthony FC, Assolda, marched into the semi-finals of 42nd Areal Panchayat Cup edging out strong contenders United Boys of Ambaulim 1-0 in a thrilling quarter-final organised by Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club at Padribhat ground, Sao Jose de Areal, on Friday.
The match remained goalless in the first half despite end-to-end action. The deadlock was finally broken in the 55th minute when Vitorino Fernandes rose high to nod home a precise cross from Frazer Gomes, sending the St Anthony FC supporters into jubilation.
UB Ambaulim, refusing to bow out quietly, launched wave after wave of attacks in the closing stages. Felixson Fernandes came agonisingly close with a powerful strike that was parried away, while Sowel Fernandes’ effort hit the post in the dying minutes, denying them a deserved equaliser.
