Nine transgender individuals in Mumbai reportedly attempted suicide on Monday in protest against derogatory comments directed at their spiritual leader, Salma Khan, associated with the non-profit Kinnar Maa Sansthan. The organisation works for the welfare and empowerment of transgender and Hijra communities across India.
According to police, the incident took place on the first floor of the non-profit’s office. The nine individuals were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, treated, and later discharged. Authorities confirmed that all are out of danger.

The event follows a similar tragic case in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where around 25 members of the transgender community allegedly consumed phenyl in protest. Police suspect the Mumbai incident may be linked to tensions between local groups within the transgender community.
Mental health experts emphasise the importance of immediate support. Helplines such as the Vandrevala Foundation (9999666555) and TISS iCall (022-25521111) are available for those in distress. Officials are investigating the incident and counselling affected individuals.
