The South Goa Collector’s Office is awaiting a detailed report from field officials as the probe into last week’s fatal fire at a private shipbuilding unit in Rassai-Loutolim intensifies. The blaze has claimed five lives and sparked public anger over alleged safety lapses and administrative negligence.
Additional Collector-II Ramesh Gaonkar told O Heraldo that a comprehensive report has been sought from the Deputy Collector. “We have asked for a detailed account of the incident and the safety measures followed by the company. The report will guide the next course of administrative action,” he said.

Locals said the fire began after an explosion in the shipyard’s fabrication and repair section, engulfing parts of the unit and trapping workers inside. Five succumbed to burn injuries, while several others remain hospitalised.
The Factories and Boilers Department has suspended operations and sealed the site pending investigation. Preliminary findings suggest safety lapses, including inadequate fire-fighting systems and emergency exits.
Residents accused authorities of “reactive governance” and urged stronger enforcement of safety norms. Workers’ unions have demanded compensation for victims’ families and regular safety audits, while environmentalists warned of possible contamination of the Zuari River.
