Arpora Tragedy a Wake-Up Call: Ex-Taxi Union Leader Sanjay Kole Urges Crackdown on Illegal Tourism Activities in Mandrem

Former taxi union leader Sanjay Kole has urged the Tourism Department and Goa Police to treat the Arpora fire tragedy as a serious lesson and immediately crack down on illegal activities taking place along the beaches in the Mandrem constituency.
Speaking at a public gathering, Kole said the authorities must ensure that unregulated and unsafe tourism operations are not allowed to flourish. He highlighted several ongoing violations, including unauthorised beach events with loud music, illegal massage centres, unregistered Russian tour operators, unlawful constructions, and hotels operating without mandatory parking permissions.
Kole stressed that such activities not only violate the law but also compromise public safety and damage Goa’s tourism reputation. He pointed out that the recent Arpora incident, which resulted in the loss of many lives, should serve as a strong reminder of the consequences of overlooking safety norms.
He called on the government to enforce stricter inspections, shut down illegal setups, and ensure transparency in tourism-related permissions. “Only when authorities take firm action will Goa’s beaches remain safe and its tourism industry regain credibility,” Kole said.
The appeal adds to growing voices demanding stronger regulation and accountability in the state’s nightlife and tourism sectors.
