In a startling revelation that has intensified scrutiny on Goa’s tourism and nightlife sector, a multi-department inspection drive across Salcete and Canacona has found zero compliance among the establishments checked. Officials confirmed that not a single nightclub, restaurant, shack or commercial entertainment venue inspected was operating with all mandatory permissions in place.
The district-wide inspections were launched in the wake of the Arpora nightclub fire tragedy, which claimed several lives and exposed severe safety lapses. Determined to prevent similar incidents, authorities initiated a coordinated sweep across South Goa’s coastal belt, where tourist traffic surges during the peak season.
The inspection team comprises officials from the Fire and Emergency Services, Electricity Department, Public Works Department, Police, Excise Department, and other regulatory agencies. Their mandate: identify establishments posing risks to public safety due to structural violations, illegal modifications, lack of fire clearances, electrical hazards, and missing operational permissions.
Sources told Herald that eight establishments were inspected on Tuesday alone — and the findings were “deeply disturbing.” Each venue reportedly had at least ten violations, many classified as serious and indicating long-term non-compliance.
Officials described the situation as “systemic and alarming,” pointing to years of ignored regulations, unchecked expansion, and possible administrative lapses in granting or renewing licences.
The ongoing drive is expected to widen in the coming days, with authorities signalling strict action against venues that continue operating without meeting safety norms. The revelations have amplified public concern over Goa’s popular nightlife hubs, especially in the wake of the Arpora tragedy that triggered the renewed enforcement push.
