US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may increase tariffs on India if New Delhi continues purchasing oil from Russia. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said Washington expects India to cooperate on reducing energy imports from Moscow.
According to the US President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was aware that the White House was unhappy about the Russian oil trade and had already taken steps to scale back purchases.
“We could raise tariffs on India if they don’t help on the Russian oil issue,” Trump stated, adding that India had significantly lowered its oil intake from Russia in recent months.
He went on to describe Modi as “a very good man,” while suggesting that New Delhi’s actions were driven by a desire to maintain strong ties with Washington. “They wanted to make me happy, basically… They do a lot of trade with us, and we can raise tariffs very quickly,” Trump added.
The comments come amid heightened global scrutiny of Russian energy exports and growing diplomatic pressure on nations continuing to buy from Moscow.
