Ex-Australia cricket star Damien Martyn has shown a remarkable improvement after coming out of an induced coma while undergoing treatment for meningitis at a Gold Coast hospital. Cricket Australia confirmed that the 54-year-old World Cup winner, who was admitted last week, is expected to be moved out of the intensive care unit soon.
Australian broadcaster Fox Sports reported during Day 2 of the fifth Ashes Test that Martyn is now out of the coma and speaking to his loved ones. Former teammate Adam Gilchrist described the past 48 hours as an “unbelievable turn of events,” adding that Martyn is responding well to treatment and is in good spirits. His wife Amanda thanked the global cricket community for its overwhelming support.
