Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday flagged off India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train, connecting Howrah near Kolkata with Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati. Designed as an overnight service, the state-of-the-art train aims to provide a faster and more comfortable rail link between West Bengal and Assam, both currently poll-bound states.
The Prime Minister flagged off the train from Malda Town in West Bengal and also virtually launched the return Guwahati–Howrah service. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the fully air-conditioned sleeper train will offer an airline-like travel experience at economical fares.

Built for a top speed of 180 kmph, the train is expected to operate at 120–130 kmph, reducing travel time on the route by around 2.5 hours. The service is also expected to boost tourism and religious travel in the region.
