A devastating explosion ripped through a fireworks shop in central China’s Hubei Province on Wednesday, claiming 12 lives and marking the second such tragedy during Lunar New Year celebrations.
Second Deadly Incident in Days
The blast struck around 2 p.m. local time in Zhengji Town, Xiangyang City, engulfing about 50 square meters in flames. Emergency teams rushed to the scene, extinguishing the fire by 3:30 p.m., but rescuers recovered 12 bodies from the rubble. Authorities are investigating the cause, with no details released yet.
This follows a fireworks shop explosion in Jiangsu Province on Sunday, where eight died and two were injured. China warned Tuesday that fireworks pose the “biggest risks” during Spring Festival, urging stricter controls on production and sales.
