Sankalp Amonkar has said that coal handling operations at Mormugao Port remain a serious concern for residents in his constituency.
Responding to media queries, Amonkar stated that coal handling by two companies at the port has been a longstanding issue and that he has repeatedly raised the matter, including in the Goa Legislative Assembly.
He said that a few days ago low-grade coal was being handled at the port, and the smell from it affected large parts of the constituency. Following complaints from residents, several precautionary measures were taken.
According to the MLA, the authorities also obtained a written assurance from the company involved, after which the smell has currently been brought under control. However, he emphasised that the issue has not been fully resolved.
Amonkar said the matter has been brought to the attention of Pramod Sawant. He added that a special meeting of the local council was held where a resolution on the issue was passed.
The MLA further informed that a meeting with the Chief Minister has been scheduled for 4 pm tomorrow to discuss the coal handling issue and possible long-term solutions.
