These easily fit into Goan homes, offering serenity and cheerfulness, certainly depending on its themes, materials used, size and more. “Terrariums fit very well in Goan homes as they complement the tropical, nature-inspired lifestyle of Goa. Their greenery blends beautifully with airy spaces, balconies, and verandas commonly found in houses. They are also perfect for adding a fresh, aesthetic touch indoors without needing much maintenance. Terrariums can enhance both modern and traditional Goan decor with their natural charm,” said Raksha Sudin Verenker, Proprietor of a Plant Studio in Margao. “Terrariums don’t just ‘fit’ in Goa, they truly thrive in its climate. The key is to embrace a tropical approach rather than a desert-style setup,” said Corina Dsouza, another owner of a Plant studio in Nagoa Arpora. According to the plant expert, while making a terrarium in Goa, it’s important to choose plants that love warmth and humidity. Maintaining the right balance is essential, not too wet and not sealed indefinitely, so the ecosystem can regulate itself. “With Goa’s natural humidity doing much of the work, a well-planned terrarium can flourish with minimal effort,” said Corina. POPULAR TERRARIUM STYLES AND TRENDS Miniature Terrarium, Open Terrarium, Desert Terrarium, and Closed Terrarium are the wide varieties of easily constructable terrariums. Tricia Saldanha, a plant expert and owner of a plant studio in Porvorim, shared, “Miniature Terrariums are small, compact glass jars with succulents or small, sturdy plants, which are perfect for desks. Open Terrariums are made in various-sized glass containers for plants and flowers that need airflow. They could be of various shapes and sizes. Desert Terrariums are made with the desert theme of varieties of cactus, succulents and vines and are low maintenance. Closed Terrariums are a self-sustaining ecosystem in a Jar. It requires minimal watering and no direct sunlight.” DIY in terrarium mini gardens that look like a little world is something that everyone enjoys doing. “People love creating DIY mini gardens that look like little worlds, often with fairy or nature-inspired themes. Another big trend is biophilic design, where homes are filled with greenery to bring a natural, calming feel indoors. Many prefer garden themes with water features, birds, animals, and lush plants. Overall, the trend focuses on natural, eco-friendly, and visually soothing designs,” said Raksha.
A SIMPLE GUIDE TO MAKING YOUR OWN TERRARIUM Constructing a terrarium is a no-brainer. Plant expert Tricia Saldanha explains how to make an open terrarium as it is versatile and low maintenance, “Pick out a theme which could be a Beach Vibe, Desert Oasis, Forest theme or other similar. Plan the decor and plants to be used, then depending on size choose a clear glass bowl, vase or container, add a layer/s of sand, small rocks or pebbles, followed by a layer of activated charcoal (optional) to prevent odor and purify water, add potting mix below the plant’s root, add moss if available for a rich look, and plant Pic : Raksha Sudin Verenker, proprietor of Meraki Plant Studio your favorite cactii, succulents, vines or any sturdy plants in proportion to the terrarium glass container. Decorate with colored stones, sea shells, tiny figurines, or fairy lights” The biggest challenges in maintaining a terrarium lie in balancing moisture levels, especially in the beginning, when careful observation is key. Too little water can cause plants to dry out, while too much can lead to root rot. “Depending on the types of plants, it’s important to maintain the right light exposure, temperature, and watering frequency. To ensure sustainability and eco-conscious living through terrariums, use your creativity with recycled clear open-mouthed glass, bowls, or shapes of your choice, keep water usage minimal, incorporate natural décor like rocks and twigs, choose locally grown or even garden plants for better longevity, and include drainage layers of pebbles and rocks to avoid water accumulation,” explained Tricia.
RISING DEMAND PROVES TERRARIUMS ARE NO PASSING TREND “Pricing for terrariums varies from affordable options to premium customised pieces, depending on the size, glass container, and detailing. Overall, the demand is steadily increasing as more people are choosing them for home decor and gifting. Terrariums are especially popular because they are low-maintenance and visually appealing,” said Raksha. Customers opt for personalised terrariums by choosing different themes and at times miniature fairy items, plants and more. “Customisation makes each piece more meaningful and unique for gifting. I even remember one niece ordering a terrarium for her aunt’s 60th birthday, specifically requesting a miniature car to be included because her aunt loved driving,” said Raksha. Plant lovers claim that terrariums are not merely a fad, but a timeless décor element that has always been around and will continue to define the effortless yet elegant home décor category. “They are not a fad. Terrariums have been existing for years; they’re a niche,” said Corina. Terrariums are popular because they are easy to care for and visually appealing. “Terrariums are not just a fad; people genuinely enjoy making and maintaining them. Many people find the process of creating and arranging them stress-relieving. They also make meaningful gifts, which keeps the interest growing,” shared Raksha.
