The latest findings from the Periodic Labour Force Survey released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation have triggered a political row in Goa, with the opposition criticising the ruling government over rising unemployment.
According to the data, Goa has recorded the highest unemployment rate in the country at 8.3 per cent, significantly above the national average of 3.1 per cent.
Reacting sharply, Amarnath Panjikar alleged that the figures expose the failure of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government under Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Panjikar termed the data “a clear indictment” of the government’s inability to generate employment and safeguard the future of the state’s youth. He said the rising unemployment rate is not merely a statistic but reflects deeper issues in governance and economic planning.
The development has intensified political debate in the state, with opposition leaders demanding accountability and concrete measures to address unemployment, while the government is yet to respond in detail to the claims.
