The controversy began after the Punjab Kings versus Kolkata Knight Riders fixture was abandoned due to rain, resulting in both teams sharing one point. Following the match, Shresta—who is a professional dancer and choreographer—posted a light-hearted video wearing a Punjab Kings jersey, joking that Punjab had “given” KKR one point because Punjabis are big-hearted.
While the clip was intended as playful banter, it triggered criticism from several users online, with some allegedly sending abusive and threatening messages.
Shresta explains decision to remove post
Responding to the backlash, Shresta said she deleted the video because it had been “misunderstood” by some viewers. She clarified that the post was meant purely in jest and not to insult anyone.
In an Instagram statement, she said she was not taking the video down because she believed she had done anything wrong, but because she did not want negativity to affect her brother or his team.
Shresta also urged fans to maintain perspective, reminding them that cricket is a sport and rivalries should remain fun and respectful. She added that she will continue supporting her brother but hopes people can be “kinder and more understanding.”
The incident once again highlights the growing issue of online abuse faced by public figures and their families during high-profile sporting events.
