Legendary singer Asha Bhosle, one of India’s most prolific playback artists, passed away at 92 after battling cardiac and respiratory issues. Admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday in critical condition, she was rushed to the ICU that night. Her son Anand confirmed the news Sunday afternoon; last rites are set for Monday.
A Stellar Career Spanning Decades
Born in 1933 into the musical Mangeshkar family, Asha began singing at age 9, debuting in a 1943 film. By the 1950s, she dominated Bollywood, initially typecast in cabaret numbers but later excelling in ghazals like “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” from Umrao Jaan, earning a National Award. She clinched seven Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Awards and another National honor for Ijaazat. Rivaled only by sister Lata Mangeshkar, Asha recorded thousands of songs, her versatility defining Hindi film music.

In a 2023 interview, she critiqued modern tunes, preferring classical pieces by Bhimsen Joshi and occasional hits by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan or Sunidhi Chauhan to hone her craft.
Turbulent Personal Life
Asha’s journey included eloping at 16 with Ganpatrao Bhosle, her 31-year-old secretary, against family wishes. After three children and alleged mistreatment by in-laws, they separated in 1960. In 1980, she wed composer Rahul Dev Burman, son of Sachin Dev Burman, despite family opposition; he passed in 1994. Granddaughter Zanai Bhosle, also a singer, stayed by her side till the end.
