Digital Arrest Scams: CBI to Launch Chatbot to Help People Verify Notices Issued to Them

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will unveil ‘Abhay’, an AI-powered chatbot on Monday, empowering citizens to instantly verify the authenticity of agency notices amid surging digital arrest frauds. Chief Justice Surya Kant inaugurates it at the 22nd D P Kohli Memorial Lecture, honoring CBI founder D P Kohli (1907-1968) – delivering a talk on cyber crime challenges for police and judiciary while awarding 24 Meritorious Service Medals.

Scammers impersonate CBI officials, brandishing fake notices for non-existent cases to coerce virtual “arrests” and extort crores, contributing to Supreme Court-flagged ₹54,000 crore cyber thefts labeled “robbery or dacoity.” Launched since 2000, the lecture fosters dialogue on modern policing. ‘Abhay’ promises a vital shield, letting users thwart cons exploiting agency authority in India’s escalating cyber fraud crisis.
