Deadly firecracker factory blast in Virudhunagar kills 18, several injured

A devastating explosion tore through a firecracker factory in Kattanarpatti, located in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district, on Sunday, leaving at least 18 people dead and six others injured, according to a report by Press Trust of India. The blast, which triggered a massive fire, caused widespread destruction in the surrounding area and prompted an immediate emergency response.

Officials from the state fire and rescue department confirmed the incident, stating that teams were rushed to the site to contain the blaze and carry out rescue operations. The injured were quickly shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, while efforts continued to assess the extent of the damage.

Reacting to the tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed deep grief over the loss of lives. In a post on X, he conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and described the incident as extremely distressing. He also directed senior ministers, including KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu, to visit the accident site immediately, oversee rescue efforts, and provide support to affected families.

The Chief Minister further instructed local district authorities to ensure swift relief measures and necessary assistance for those impacted by the explosion.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his condolences, stating that he was deeply saddened by the tragic incident. He extended his sympathies to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
