The Election Commission of India has ordered repolling in 15 polling booths across West Bengal’s Magrahat Paschim and Diamond Harbour constituencies following reports of voting irregularities during the April 29 phase of the 2026 Assembly elections. According to the official directive issued by the state’s Chief Electoral Officer, the earlier polling at these stations has been declared void under Section 58(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
Out of the 15 booths, 11 are located in Magrahat Paschim, while the remaining four fall within Diamond Harbour. Fresh polling is scheduled for May 2, with voting to take place between 7 am and 6 pm. Authorities have instructed officials to ensure wide public awareness, including traditional announcements, and to notify all contesting candidates in writing.
The decision comes after detailed reports were submitted by Returning Officers and election observers, citing procedural lapses and complaints from stakeholders. Election authorities emphasized that corrective action is essential to maintain the integrity of the democratic process.
Meanwhile, security arrangements across the state have been intensified. With concerns over potential post-poll unrest, law enforcement agencies are on high alert. Restrictions on public gatherings have been imposed in select areas of Kolkata where vote counting will occur on May 4.
The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections have seen exceptionally high participation, with a record turnout of 92.47% across two phases held on April 23 and April 29. Despite the strong voter engagement, allegations and tensions have prompted strict vigilance measures to ensure peaceful completion of the electoral process.
