Tamil Nadu Government Formation LIVE: Vijay Meets Governor, Claims Support of 118 MLAs

Tamil Nadu’s political situation remained fluid on Thursday as parties continued negotiations and counter-claims over government formation. The uncertainty follows reports that TVK chief Vijay has emerged as a key contender to form the next government, claiming the support of 118 MLAs from a combination of allies.

According to developments reported on May 8, Vijay met the Tamil Nadu Governor, further intensifying speculation about a possible change in leadership. Sources indicate that he has staked claim to form the government and is expected to take oath as Chief Minister on May 9 at 11 am, subject to formal confirmation.

The proposed alliance backing TVK reportedly includes 107 MLAs from TVK, along with support from Congress (5 MLAs), CPI (2), CPM (2), and VCK (2), taking the total to 118. However, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has not yet announced its position, leaving room for further political developments.

Meanwhile, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan stated that the party has not entered into any discussion with the AIADMK regarding an alliance. He said the DMK would wait until May 10, reportedly the Governor’s deadline for government formation clarity, before taking any further political decision. He also indicated that consultations with alliance partners would be held if required.

The AIADMK dismissed rumours of any understanding with the DMK, calling such claims baseless. At the same time, VCK leader Sinthanai Selvan criticised emerging political alignments, warning that opposition unity was essential and alleging attempts to influence outcomes in favour of a “Governor-backed arrangement.”

Congress MP Manickam Tagore also reacted strongly, accusing the BJP of attempting to delay government formation despite what he described as a clear electoral mandate.
