Ahead of the IPL 2026 final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar proposed several changes to the tournament’s playing conditions, arguing that the current format favours batters too heavily.
Speaking at the ESPNcricinfo Awards, Tendulkar expressed concerns over the Impact Player rule, which was introduced in 2023. The rule allows teams to bring in a substitute player during a match, often strengthening batting line-ups.

According to Tendulkar, bowlers are already under immense pressure in the T20 format, and adding an extra batter further tilts the balance. He said the game needs adjustments to ensure fair competition between bat and ball.
The former India captain suggested introducing a bowling powerplay. Under his proposal, the first four overs would remain part of the traditional batting powerplay with only two fielders allowed outside the circle. The remaining two overs could be taken by the fielding captain at any stage of the innings, with an additional fielder permitted outside the ring.
Tendulkar also recommended increasing the maximum number of overs a bowler can bowl from four to five. He argued that while batters can occupy the crease for the entire innings, bowlers are restricted despite being match-winners.
His comments add to the growing debate around the Impact Player rule, with several current stars previously voicing similar concerns.
