England captain Ben Stokes could be facing the biggest challenge of his career off the field, with reports suggesting he may step down as Test captain and could even consider retiring from international cricket following a nightclub incident currently under investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are being investigated over an incident that allegedly took place at a London nightclub in the early hours of Monday, shortly after England’s 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s.

According to reports, the incident involved members of Saracens Rugby Club who were celebrating the end of their season at the same venue. The disagreement is believed to have started between Atkinson and a Saracens academy player before escalating.
Senior cricket correspondent George Dobell told talkSPORT that there are growing fears within cricket circles that Stokes could choose to step aside before any disciplinary action is taken.
“I fear from everything I hear that Stokes is going to act first. And, regretfully, I hear that he is going to step down and possibly even retire,” Dobell said.
The development comes only months after England introduced a strict midnight curfew for players and staff following criticism of player behaviour during the Ashes tour of Australia. Concerns over drinking culture within the squad had become a major talking point after several incidents during the tour.
Stokes had only recently returned to action after recovering from a serious facial injury and was playing his first Test series since January 2026.
The controversy has overshadowed England’s victory at Lord’s and added to a growing list of off-field issues that have troubled the national side in recent months.
