Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association President Roquezinho D’Souza claimed that the jetty is receiving “step-motherly treatment” and urged the government and concerned agencies to take immediate measures to improve the infrastructure, which is vital for the local fishing community.
Responding to the concerns, Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) Chairman Dr. N. Vinod Kumar said that discussions are currently underway with the government regarding the proposed construction of a state-of-the-art finger jetty at Kharewado.
He explained that the project cannot move forward until 31 families residing in the area are rehabilitated. According to the MPA Chairman, the rehabilitation process is a prerequisite before the authority can apply for Environmental Clearance (EC) and initiate the development of the new jetty.
The proposed finger jetty is expected to enhance facilities for the fishing community and improve operational efficiency. However, officials indicated that the project’s progress will depend on the timely completion of the rehabilitation process and the necessary statutory approvals.
The issue has once again highlighted the long-standing demand for improved fishing infrastructure and the need to balance development with the rehabilitation of affected families.
