A preliminary 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Saturday evening, sending tremors across several neighbouring countries, including Pakistan and parts of northwest India. According to initial seismic reports, the earthquake occurred at 7:04 pm IST at a depth of 215 kilometres, making it a deep-focus event.
The epicentre was located around 81 kilometres from Kalafgan in northeastern Afghanistan. Besides Afghanistan, tremors were also felt in Pakistan, India, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan. Despite the widespread shaking, there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.

Experts noted that the earthquake’s considerable depth allowed the tremors to travel across a vast geographical area. However, deep-focus earthquakes generally cause less destruction at the surface than shallow earthquakes because much of the seismic energy dissipates before reaching ground level.
Authorities in the affected regions are monitoring the situation, while residents in several cities reported feeling mild to moderate tremors. Further updates are expected as seismic agencies continue to analyse the event.
