Heavy rainfall continued to lash Mumbai on Saturday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city and neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad. The weather department warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated places likely to receive extremely heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph.
Despite the adverse weather, Mumbai’s suburban railway network remained largely operational, although commuters experienced delays on several routes due to waterlogging. According to the Central Railway’s latest update, trains on the Main Line connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Kalyan, Karjat, Khopoli and Kasara were running at a cautious speed.
Services on the Harbour Line between CSMT, Panvel and Goregaon, the Trans-Harbour Line connecting Thane, Vashi and Panvel, and the Port Line between Belapur, Nerul and Uran continued to operate normally. Meanwhile, the Western Railway said trains on the Churchgate-Dahanu Road suburban corridor were delayed by around 15 to 20 minutes due to waterlogging between Nalasopara and Virar. Authorities urged passengers to plan their journeys accordingly.
The IMD also forecast high tides, including one measuring 4.26 metres on Saturday afternoon, raising concerns over flooding in low-lying areas. Civic authorities remained on high alert as intense rain triggered multiple incidents across the city.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported receiving 91 complaints related to fallen trees and branches. Emergency teams were deployed to clear affected locations. Officials also recorded 30 short-circuit incidents across Mumbai and responded after informing the concerned electricity authorities.
In addition, 19 cases of partial house or wall collapses were reported from different parts of the city. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to all affected sites. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors during intense spells of rain and follow official weather updates until conditions improve.
