Mopa: The Pernem taluka locals and various groups fighting for their rights over the Mopa Airport issue on Friday sought the President of India’s intervention in providing relief to the affected people.

Mopa Vimantal Pidit Xetkari Samiti, Goa Kul Mundmar Sangarsh Samiti, Shri Bodgeshwar Xetkari Samiti and villagers of Mopa, Ugvem, Casarwane, Chandel, Varkhand and Amberem in a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind demanded that the families, who have lost their land for this project, should be guaranteed a government or fixed job at the airport site with a written assurance.
“Further the members of affected families should be guaranteed self-employment schemes or business opportunities such as to run shops or services like taxis, rickshaws, two-wheeler pilots at the airport site,” it stated.
They further demanded to provide training and technical expertise to the members of affected families through recognised institutes so that they can be further absorbed for employment under the Airport authorities.
Their another demand is to provide adequate compensation equivalent to four times of the market rate be given in lieu of the acquired land and remaining land to be returned back to the owners and also the families, whose houses are demolished for this project, should be rehabilitated to the new houses nearby to the airport at free of cost.
“The government should also release a white paper on the Mopa Airport project and also to withdraw the criminal cases which have been filed against the affected farmers,” the letter added.
