Rahul, who played a crucial hand of 77 off 162 balls, walked off the field following the tea session after experiencing physical discomfort. Kotak reassured fans and media at the close of play, confirming that the issue was nothing more than mild cramping and that Rahul is expected to resume his innings on Day 2.
The injury scare unfolded right after the short tea break when Rahul emerged late from the pavilion and quickly appeared to be wincing in discomfort. Struggling with finger mobility, he received on-field treatment from the team physio. With the discomfort persisting, Rahul left the field to allow India captain Shubman Gill to take over at the crease.

Speaking at the post-day press interaction, Kotak clarified that the symptoms were localized muscle spasms rather than a structural injury. He explained that once cramps begin, they often manifest across multiple areas including the fingers, hamstrings, and groin. By the conclusion of the day’s play, Rahul had recovered sufficiently, prompting the support staff to clear him to bat on Sunday morning as India looks to build on its commanding position.
Kotak praised Rahul’s tactical flexibility and maturity, highlighting his willingness to adapt to whatever role the team requires across formats. He noted that while Rahul occupies lower-middle-order positions in limited-overs cricket, he takes on the demanding opening responsibility in red-ball matches. According to the coach, Rahul’s consistency, willingness to anchor the innings, and ability to build critical partnerships make him an invaluable senior asset for the squad.
