Costi Villagers Boycott Ganesh Idol Immersion Over Alleged Piggery Pollution

Costi: Residents of Costi village have unanimously resolved to boycott the traditional Ganesh idol immersion in the local nallah, alleging that the waterway has been contaminated by piggery waste and toxic slurry.

The decision was taken at a special village meeting convened to discuss the ongoing issue concerning the Jennifer Piggery Farm in Costi. Villagers alleged that wastewater, including piggery effluents, is being discharged into the nallah, resulting in severe pollution of the waterway.

The residents have demanded the immediate closure of the Jennifer Piggery Farm, stating that continued discharge of waste has affected the condition of the nallah and raised concerns among the local community.

According to the villagers, several complaints have already been submitted to the concerned authorities, including the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). However, they alleged that inspection reports have not been made available to them so far.

The villagers further claimed that despite protests and repeated representations, no effective action has been taken against the piggery farm.

With Ganesh Chaturthi approaching, the residents said they would not carry out the traditional idol immersion in the polluted nallah until the issue is addressed. They have urged the government and concerned authorities to conduct an immediate inspection, take appropriate action and ensure that the waterway is protected from further pollution.
