WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Sunday criticised Canada after trade negotiations between the two neighbouring countries broke down, accusing Ottawa of seeking the benefits of being a US state without becoming one.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Canada wanted the “benefits of being a State, without being one” and reiterated his controversial suggestion that Canada should become the 51st US state.

Trump also accused Canada of imposing heavy tariffs on American farmers for years, declaring that such treatment would no longer continue.
His remarks came hours after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would impose retaliatory tariffs on certain US goods in response to the 50 per cent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian products.
The latest exchange marks a further escalation in trade tensions between the two countries following the collapse of negotiations.
