Gupta surname most represented

Among established family businesses, the Gupta surname tops the list in terms of representation, with 12 families featuring in the rankings. The Agarwal surname follows with 11 families.

The Jain and Patel surnames are represented by 10 families each, underlining their significant presence across India’s business landscape. The Shah surname also has a notable presence, with eight families making the list.

Reddy leads first-generation entrepreneurs

The picture changes when it comes to first-generation family businesses. Here, the Reddy surname leads with nine families represented.

The Jain surname appears again with five families, followed by Agarwal with three. Seven other surnames — Mittal, Rao, Singh, Prasad, Shah, Mehta and Thakkar — have two families each in this category.

The presence of these names highlights the growing contribution of entrepreneurs who have built businesses without relying solely on inherited corporate legacies.

Surnames spanning both categories

One of the most interesting aspects of the rankings is the overlap between established family businesses and first-generation enterprises.

The surnames Jain, Agarwal, Shah, Mehta and Singh appear in both categories. This suggests that these communities have a presence across generations, with some families continuing established businesses while others are creating new enterprises.

The findings offer a snapshot of how India’s business ecosystem is evolving. Traditional family-run enterprises remain a major force, with generations of wealth and business experience continuing to shape large corporate groups. At the same time, first-generation entrepreneurs are steadily adding new names and business models to the country’s economic landscape.

The rankings therefore represent more than a list of prominent surnames. They reflect the combination of legacy, entrepreneurship and generational transition that continues to define Indian business.

As established business families expand and new entrepreneurs build companies from the ground up, India’s corporate landscape is becoming a blend of long-standing dynasties and emerging business families.
