MARGAO: Faced with the continuous outbreaks of fire at Sonsoddo and a barrage from the Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardessai who even accused them of merely seeking to shift the responsibility, the Margao Municipal Council at an urgent meeting held in the afternoon decided to order 2000 lts of Renerzyne + enzyme to control the fire.
Last night 150 ml of the enzyme mixed with 4500 ml of water in a fire tender was used on the dump yard and the fire was doused. However, on Wednesday morning the whole area was covered with smoke which was oozing out of the dump yard and covering the surrounding areas making it difficult for people to breathe.
Agitated locals had a fracas with Dy CM Sardessai over the matter with some of them challenging him to live in their houses for one day. The locals were further angered when Vijai said that they had constructed their houses knowing that it was next to the dump yard.
“Why did the municipal council give us permission to construct the houses if that was not a safe site to houses?” they questioned even as Vijai walked away from there. The locals were upset that the minister was not even willing to listen to their grievances even though they have been suffering tremendously for the last three days.
Vijai told them that he had come to find a solution as he knew they were suffering and pointed out that Sonsoddo was a problem inherited by him and added that he inherited the problem that was created by Congress.
Spraying of the enzyme will commence on Thursday morning as 550 ml of it is expected to arrive at around 1 am and the remaining stock will be sent immediately. Two layers of the enzyme will be sprayed over the dump yard.
“The enzyme that is known to multiply attacks the methane forming bacteria and hence results in stopping formation of methane which in turn will stop the fire. As the fire is on deep inside and cannot come out, it is only the smoke or fumes that are escaping and this too will stop once the fire is doused “said Anand Nevrekar representative of the company.
The fire services have been asked to keep at least 10 fire tenders ready so that 150 ml of the enzyme can be mixed in each tender to be sprayed on the dump yard. Tranquil Speciality Product Pvt Ltd is confident of not only dousing the fire but also stopping the smoke emission but only wants time to succeed which could extend to one week.
Meanwhile the Fire Services was toying with the idea of using Nitrogen to douse the fire but could not do much as they could not get the required expert who would be able to direct the Nitrogen gas at the locale where the fire was burning as the gas has to be specifically targeted.
