Temple thefts: police team leaves for Honavar

A police team was dispatched to Honavar in neighbouring Karnataka on Thursday, even as the police are gearing up to start combining operation in and around the Chandreshwar and Bhutnath temples at Paroda as part of investigations into the daring temple theft cases.
Superintendent of Police, South Allan De Sa told newsmen that a police team headed by PI Raju Raut Desai has been sent to Honavar-Karnataka as a similar theft of silver items from a temple had taken place some time back. “The police are investigating into all angles, including the involvement of an inter-state gang involved in such thefts”, the SP said.
Replying to a question, he said the police from the Quepem and Margao police sub-divisions, besides platoons of the IRB, would be drafted for the combing operations in the temple hillock to obtain clues in the theft cases. “The hillock will be combed from both sides, Paroda as well as from Veroda in a bid to lay hands on vital clues”, he added.
Sources in the know said the police will also try to investigating whether the same gang of miscreants were involved in the temple theft and desecration at Veroda last year.
The temple theft had sent shockwaves not only Quepem taluka, but across the State with the miscreants decamping with silver items worth over Rs 17-18 lakh.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the temple committee called on the South Goa Superintendent of Police and inquired into the investigations into the temple theft.
The committee members are believed to have urged the police to solve the daring case at the earliest.
A meeting of the Devasthan is scheduled on Sunday where the members are expected to chalk out the future course of action if the police fail to achieve a breakthrough in the case.
