PONDA: The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has installed a mini-biogas plant on a trial basis in the city and if successful, the PMC will encourage people to go for such plants as it will run on wet waste.
The mini bio-gas plant of 15 kgs capacity was installed in the second last week of November and is expected to start generating bio-gas from the second week of January.
According to information, initially, 100 kgs of cow-dung was fed to the plant and after 45 days (incubation period), every day 15 kilo of wet waste (from hotels or homes) will be added. The plant has been installed at Upper Bazzar, Ponda, near a hotel, to which bio-gas generated from this plant will be supplied.
The plant will generate bio-gas, one-fourth of the quantity of wet waste (15 kilo) fed to the plant per day.
Incidentally, PMC has not spent a single rupee on the project as the entire project cost is borne by the private firm from Kolhapur which had approached PMC with an idea to install a mini bio-gas plant on trial basis. The project cost is said to be between Rs 1 to 1.5 lakh. “The project is on trial basis and there is no investment done by PMC as the private firm has done it free of cost. There are already bio-gas plants on a larger scale in the State, but the one installed in Ponda city on trial basis is meant for individual use like hotels and colonies. Based on the outcome of the bio-gas plant, PMC will encourage people to install such facility,” informed PMC Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes.
