MAPUSA: The Colvale Village Panchayat will seal 51 illegal scrapyards operating within its jurisdiction. The decision was taken during the general body meeting held recently.
“We discussed the vexatious issue at the panchayat meeting and after taking legal opinion, it was unanimously decided to seal all illegal scrapyards operating within our jurisdiction,” said Colvale Sarpanch Sheetal Chodankar and added that action would be initiated under the Panchayat Raj Act, Section 228 against the illegalities.

Chodankar further stated that the panchayat body was being regularly questioned by villagers for not initiating action against these haddas after four scrapyards had caught fire recently and a life was lost as the victim was charred to death in the flames.
