MARGAO: In response to the objections raised by the Curchorem villagers and panchayat regarding the transportation of wet waste from Sonsoddo to the Solid Waste Management (SWM) plant in Cacora, Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Gaurish Shankhwalkar has assured the use of specialised containers designed to prevent any spillage or odour issues.
Shankhwalkar, speaking to the media, explained that a state-of-the-art transport system is in place to move 20 tonnes of waste from the Sonsoddo waste facility to the SWM in Cacora. These specialised containers, with a capacity of 10 tonnes each, also include an in-built leachate collection tank, along with advanced garbage lifting and unloading mechanisms.

It’s worth recalling that the Margao Municipal Council had faced scrutiny from the High Court, leading the civic body to adhere to the court’s directives in this matter.
While MMC has already submitted its compliance report to the High Court detailing the waste transportation process from Sonsosdo to Cacora, the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) is currently in the process of preparing an intervention petition. This petition will be filed before the High Court, outlining their objections to the transportation of waste to the SWM located within their jurisdiction.
MMC had sought permissions to transport waste to Cacora as they lack the resources to manage waste at the Sonsoddo site, which is grappling with longstanding issues.
