MARGAO: This Tulsivivah and Dindi festivals have not been very exciting for the daily wage workers of Margao Municipal Council. Over 200 personnel who work day in and day out to keep the city clean have faced the brunt of the demonetization with the banks refusing payment to MMC on Thursday and also on Friday. The salaries of these laborers may now possibly be paid on Monday.
The Tulsivivah and Dindi festivals are celebrated with great fervour like no other festival in the town. This is the day where the entire family performs the rituals and gears up for the dindi.
However, with the delay in payment of wages, the daily wage workers may not have much to celebrate about.
On Friday, the chief officer said that bonus of the laborers has been cleared already. However, over 50 percent of laborers accept wages in cash, their payment would be delayed, as withdrawal of cash from the banks is limited to only Rs 20,000 a week.
The chief officer said that the salaries of the daily wage workers, according to the instruction of the administration, have to be paid by 10th of every month. “We are trying to open bank accounts for all the people who do not have one,” said Chief Officer.
Meanwhile, daily wage worker Venod Jamuni said, “The wages this time have not been credited. We had our festivals, but we will have to spend for them from our savings. Nevertheless, we have no hard feelings towards the MMC as they are punctual in paying our wagers and this month is an exception.”
