Recently, while visiting my friend’s house near the first water tank in New Vaddem, Vasco, I came across a distressing scene where dogs were tearing apart waste bags strewn across the road. Any attempt by passers-by to shoo
them away could lead to trouble.

When I enquired, my friend informed me that repeated requests from the people in the vicinity to the municipal representatives and waste collectors have fallen on deaf ears. The road where the waste point has been set up is in a crowded residential locality, and it is a clear failure on the part of the authorities to place such a spot in the middle of a residential area. The road connects to the T-junction where New Vaddem Road meets Chicalim-Vasco Road, and a walking passage leads to Vaddem Lake.
As is often the case with such points, people simply throw their waste bags from a distance, either while walking or from their two- and four-wheelers. This has not only exacerbated the dog menace but the foul smell is also unbearable. One wonders how the people living around the spot cope with the situation. To my surprise, the spot is within walking distance of the local MLA and Minister Mauvin Godinho’s office, yet the state of affairs is so dismal.
The municipality should take action and relocate the garbage collection centre from this residential area, providing relief to the locals from the nightmare of dogs and the filth scattered around due to the waste disposal point.
