PANJIM: Friends and well wishers have come together to form the Matanhy Saldanha Memorial Foundation, which will be headed by his wife Alina Saldanha to carry forward his legacy by taking up social causes.
Announcing this on the eve of his birth anniversary, Minister for Environment and Forests Alina Saldanha said that the foundation, which has been registered as a trust will focus on conducting programmes on issues that were close to Matanhy’s heart ~ be they environmental or political issues including programmes and financial assistance to students, etc.
Important among the activities will be the holding of Matanhy Saldanha memorial lecture which has been tentatively scheduled for March 21 next year, the death anniversary of Matanhy Saldanha.
“We will be calling together persons of eminence in the fields of environment, education, etc,” Alina announced.
The foundation also hopes to establish a chair at the University in the environment/ecology sciences in the name of Matanhy Saldanha.
When asked whether the foundation would take up political issues, members of the committee said that true to Matanhy’s legacy they would take up political issues but exclude issues that divide the people of Goa and take up those that unite people.
Among the other objectives of the newly formed foundation are trusteeship education, sponsorship of students, helping village panchayats, persons involved in traditional occupations and others.
