MARGAO: With nearly three sewage chambers overflowing in Barebhatt-Raia with the heavy rains during the last few days, the deficiencies in the sewerage network has come into focus again sparking anger and fear among residents and road-users alike.
Locals stated the overflowing sewage chambers have frustrated them with the authorities failing to address the issue on priority basis.
Residents say that sewage water, combined with rainwater, continues to flow onto the roads through the overflowing chambers.
The potential contamination poses a serious risk to public health, prompting urgent calls for immediate action from local authorities.
Three spots along the busy road of Barebhatt have become problematic due to overflowing sewage chambers, causing significant inconvenience even for children. Just a few days ago, a similar incident occurred in Arlem-Raia, adding to the frustration of locals and posing risks to road-users due to overflowing sewage chambers. This problem has also been observed in several other places in Margao and nearby areas, compounding the community’s concerns about hygiene and safety.
Taking serious note of the ongoing issue with overflowing sewage chambers, a group of residents from Barebhatt convened a meeting on Monday to demand immediate action from the authorities. They highlighted that water has been continuously gushing out from a sewage chamber in their area for several days, citing heavy rainfall as the cause. Lucas Gonsalves, a resident of Barebhat, stated that the ongoing issue of overflowing sewage has significantly impacted the community. He emphasized that the situation has made daily life difficult for residents, highlighting the inconvenience and potential health risks posed by the overflowing sewage
“It has been observed that rainwater, along with sewage, is gushing out from the chambers and there are high possibilities of not only health issues but also of accidents as the area was slippery,” he stated.
